Protecting Paradise, One Flight at a Time

At Whitsunday Coast Airport, sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s a responsibility. As the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays, we’re proud to lead initiatives that help protect the natural beauty that brings people to our region.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): A National First

We’re proud to be the first commercial airport in Australia to offer Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on an ongoing basis, thanks to a partnership between Virgin Australia and Viva Energy.

SAF is made from renewable sources like used cooking oil and agricultural waste and can cut carbon emissions by up to 80 percent over its lifecycle. It's a cleaner, more responsible alternative to traditional jet fuel - and it’s already powering flights departing from Whitsunday Coast Airport.

This initiative reflects our commitment to reducing aviation-related emissions and protecting the reef, marine life and landscapes that define our region.

Harnessing Solar Energy

We’ve invested in solar infrastructure to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources. By using clean solar power to help operate our terminal and facilities, we’re lowering emissions and operating more sustainably every day.

Containers for Change

We’re proud to support Containers for Change, giving passengers and staff an easy way to recycle eligible bottles and cans at the airport to reduce waste going landfill.

Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. As we grow, Whitsunday Coast Airport remains committed to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility. With more than half a million passengers passing through our terminal each year, we’re taking bold steps to ensure our impact is a positive one.
